The Great Debate attending an HBCU or PWI? On Another View

Another View Intern India' Ray Davis, host Barbara Hamm Lee, Hampton University Grad Mackenzie Moody, Virginia Tech Grad Markius Thomas

Show up at almost any black family gathering and inevitably the conversation will lead to a debate over which historically black college or university (HBCU) is best! What school has the best football team? Which marching band stands out? Which has the most students and strong legacy? What school has gone or is going under? There is immense pride among HBCU graduates. But, what about black students who attend a predominately white institution or PWI? How does their experience differ? And which option is better for black students today? Guests Mackenzie Moody, a 2023 graduate of Hampton University, Markius Thomas, a 2025 graduate of Virginia Tech, and Lakeisha Mayes, Director of School Counseling at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk share their perspectives. A fascinating conversation on this week's Another View, which was produced by our wonderfully talented summer intern India' Ray Davis, who is attending Hampton University. This, and all Another View Programs can be heard on demand on the show's program page.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
