Privacy Policy
Last updated on February 1, 2019
Your privacy is important to us. To better protect your privacy, we provide this notice explaining our online information practices and the choices you can make about the way your information is collected and used. To make this notice easy to find, we make it available on our homepage and at every point where personally identifiable information may be requested. We’ve set this Privacy Policy up to communicate about data collection and usage with users of WHRO.org, WHRO’s Media App, email newsletters — which include, e.g., this website and any other WHRO websites that link to this Privacy Policy.
Please note that WHRO.org often includes links to third party sites or services, such as social media platforms, and sites or services owned or controlled by National Public Radio, Public Broadcasting Service, and other production partners. This Privacy Policy does not cover any third-party sites or services, or your use of them; we suggest that you review those sites’ policies to learn more about their privacy practices.
How We Collect and Use Information
Our Web site submission forms require users to give us contact information (such as their name and email address). Users may opt-out of receiving future mailings; see the choice/opt-out section below.
We will not willfully disclose your personally identifiable information to any third party without first receiving your permission. We will never sell, rent, or swap your personally identifiable information with non-affiliated third parties for their own purposes. In terms of our own use of information, we may use your personally identifiable information for internal purposes and marketing, promotional and fundraising purposes in support of public media. By opting in you are giving WHRO permission to contact you for these purposes.
We will typically explain the extent of use at the time you are asked to provide personal information. If you do not want this information to be collected or used by us for these purposes, you can simply “opt out.” Under certain circumstances, opting out may prevent your participation in activities for which personal information is needed, as in contests, newsletter subscriptions and program reminders.
We do not collect personally identifiable information from you, other than what you supply to us on a voluntary basis. Such information is not used for any other purpose and is not shared with outside parties.
We also use cookies to personalize the Web site for you, remember browser preferences, and improve our visitors’ experiences on the Web site. These cookies are not required and do not contain any personal information. For our internal purposes, we gather date, time, browser type, navigation history and IP address of all visitors to our Web sites. This information does not contain anything that can identify users personally. We use this information for our internal security audit log, trend analysis and system administration, and to gather broad demographic information about our user base for aggregate use.
If you wish to disable cookies and other use-tracking technologies, your browser settings may enable you to do so. Please be aware, though, that disabling cookies may change or reduce the functionality of the WHRO.org in certain contexts (e.g., we will not be able to store your WHRO Passport login session). Find more information on Do Not Track. We will honor your browser’s Do Not Track setting.
WHRO is based in the United States. If you voluntarily submit Personal Information to us while located or residing in a country outside the United States, you understand that you are voluntarily agreeing to the use and processing of such information as provided in this Privacy Policy, including transfer of your information to the United States, a jurisdiction which may not offer the same framework for the protection of personal information as the jurisdiction in which you are located.
The WHRO Voice Alexa Privacy Policy
Before using any of our Alexa Skills (“our skills”), please read this policy and our Alexa Skills Terms of Use, as well as the Alexa Terms of Use and the Privacy Policies by the Amazon Digital Services LLC (with its affiliates, “Amazon”).
Regarding Amazon, “Alexa” means their Alexa Voice Service which includes third party services (like our skills) and other related Software. If you use one of our skills you fully agree to this privacy policy.
General - When you use our skills you have to talk to Alexa. This voice input is sent to Amazon and us where we use it to understand what our skill should do for you. This is absolutely necessary for our service to give you an appropriate answer.
Data - We never collect or share personal data with our skills. To improve our services we analyze automatically how often utterances are spoken and other analytics. This is done automatically by Amazon in the Amazon Developer Portal. We never save data about you in our databases.
- Changes - Our skills or parts of it may change or be updated at any time. Further, this Privacy Policy might change. You can find a link to this policy on the description page of the skill in the Alexa App or in the Alexa Store. Your continued use of our skill after changes of the Privacy Policy or the skill itself will be seen as your acceptance of both.
Online Contributions
When submitting information via our secure Web pages, WHRO uses industry standard 128-bit encryption to protect your information. WHRO protects your credit card information in several ways. First, we do not keep or share personal identifying information associated with your payment card and we do not retain your card number or security code. WHRO is a PCI DSS compliant organization. That means we follow procedures developed by the credit card industry itself, which impose very strict requirements for security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, software design and other critical protective measures. We take these steps to make sure our members' card data is being kept safe throughout every transaction, and that we – and you – can have confidence that you're protected against the pain and cost of a possible data breach.
Contests, Sweepstakes, Subscriptions and Special Offers
On occasion, we may collect personal information from users in connection with optional sweepstakes, contests, newsletter subscriptions, programming reminders or special offers for which you must opt in. Such information will be used as indicated at the time of collection.
Children's Guidelines
You have trusted us for many years to provide responsible and quality content for children. This trust is even more important to you, and to us on the Internet. We believe the following commitments on our part will improve the safety, value, and enjoyment of your child's visits to our site and our affiliated sites.
- We will not collect personally identifiable information from your child.
- If your child sends us an email with a question or comment, or enters one of our contests, we will respond using his or her email, but will not store it for future communications.
- If we know that your child is under the age of thirteen, we will obtain your permission offline (by postal mail, fax or phone) before we mail any prizes or share your child's personal information with anyone else.
If your child submits stories, artwork, comments or anything else to us that is posted on our site, he or she will be identified only by first name and age.
Children should always get permission from their parents before sending any information about themselves (such as their names, email addresses, and phone numbers) via the web or mobile device, to WHRO or to anyone else.
Choice/Opt-Out
User can opt-out of receiving communication from WHRO at any time. Please direct your requests to info@whro.org. WHRO will remove your information from our database within 10 business days of receiving your request to opt-out.
As Required By Law
If we determine on a good faith basis that we are required by law (e.g., pursuant to a subpoena or judicial order) to share your personal or other information, we will endeavor to share it only to the extent we determine is reasonably necessary to comply with the request.
Acceptance of This Policy
By using this site, you signify your agreement to the terms and conditions of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please do not use the WHRO website. We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to change, modify, add, or remove portions of this policy at any time. Please check this page periodically for any changes. Your continued use of the WHRO website following the posting of any changes to these terms shall mean that you have accepted those changes.
