Wayla Chambo

Host, Afternoon Classics & Assistant Program Director for WHRO FM

Wayla Chambo is the host of Afternoon Classics and the Assistant Program Director for WHRO-FM. She joined the WHRO staff in 2014 as a weekend announcer and moved to afternoon drive host in 2016. In 2017 she was named WHRO-FM Music Coordinator, and in 2019 promoted to Assistant Program Director. Wayla is passionate about sharing classical music with everyone, from newcomers to aficionados. She combines a deep knowledge of the music with a friendly and approachable demeanor, and seeks to break down barriers and help people to connect, with the music and with each other.

In addition to her work in radio, Wayla is also a professional flutist and music educator. You can find her performing locally with ensembles such as the Norfolk Chamber Consort, Duo Thalassa with guitarist Todd Holcomb, and as a substitute flutist with the Virginia Symphony. Wayla's teaching experience includes Thomas Nelson Community College, Eastern Mennonite University, and the University of North Texas, as well teaching students of all ages and levels in a private flute studio setting.

Wayla earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, and holds previous music degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and California Institute of the Arts.

During the few times when she's not thinking about music, Wayla also enjoys practicing yoga, reading fiction and poetry, watching movies, and sharing coffee and conversation with friends. She lives in Norfolk.
