From the CEO - November 2019

This is a WHRO Public Media original production that features the Norfolk Street Choir—an initiative that offers the homeless and impoverished of Norfolk an opportunity to sing together in a performing choir. This important program allows members of the Hampton Roads homeless community to discover their voice with the help of a passionate conductor.

The homeless community is subject to misunderstanding and stereotypes. This documentary has the capacity to help correct misconceptions and encourage the public to view the homeless community as people of dignity and worth. We hope you will join us for the premiere event on November 12 and then tune in when the film airs on November 18 at 8 p.m. Learn more at whro.org/cityvoices

We have a few other notable events coming up this month. On November 16, we’ll be celebrating Sesame Street’s 50th birthday with a party at the Slover Library in Norfolk, and our next Classical Open Mic will be held on November 17 at the Chrysler Museum. You can find details about these and other upcoming events at whro.org/events

This month also brings Season 4 of Curate, our arts program that airs on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. Each week, we showcase emerging artists from Hampton Roads and across the nation. Speaking of the arts, November is the month that PBS showcases some of Broadway’s finest performances. On Fridays at 9 p.m. through the Great Performances: Broadway! series, you’ll see 42nd Street (November 1), The King and I (November 8), Red (November 15), Much Ado About Nothing (November 22), and Kinky Boots (November 29).

On our radio stations throughout November, you’ll find the news and music programs that you enjoy along with full coverage of the election season and some special shows for Thanksgiving. Lastly, we close out the month with our fall television pledge drive starting on Saturday, November 30. The exciting shows we feature are made possible by your generous contributions. If you haven’t donated recently, we’d love to hear from you. Give us a call or visit our website to support the programs you enjoy.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
