I’m excited about a new PBS program premiering this month that explores a similar topic. In American Creed Pulitzer Prizewinning historian David M. Kennedy teams up with his Stanford University colleague Condoleezza Rice to explore whether a unifying set of beliefs, an American creed, can prove more powerful than the concerns that divide us. It is sure to be a fascinating and thought-provoking show.
We also have a great lineup of programs for February that celebrate Black History Month. Tune in for Independent Lens: Winnie (Monday, February 5, 10:00 p.m.) about activist Winnie Madikizela Mandela who worked to bring down apartheid in South Africa from the inside; Maya Angelou: American Masters (Friday, February 16, 9 p.m.) a powerful documentary about the incomparable poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist; and Independent Lens: Tell Them We Are Rising (Monday, February 19, 9 p.m.) about the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years in American history, culture and identity.
Also, don’t miss our annual live broadcast of The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 17 at 2:00 p.m. on WHRO TV15, or stream the event at facebook.com/WHROeducation This is always an exciting event in which middle school students from across the area compete for the regional title.
Lastly, throughout the month of February, music fans will want to hear the local bands that are performing as part of the Out of the Box concert series that continues every Thursday night at the Sandler Center.
