Mal Vincent was not only The Virginian-Pilot’s film and arts critic for more than half a century; he also helped create and host an annual summer movie series at Naro Expanded Cinema that often sold out.
(He also had a popular podcast at WHRO called “This Week in Mal’s World.”)
Vincent died in 2021, but the movie series has continued and opens on Monday.
The films — except for the final silent classic — begin at 7 p.m. Mondays, with a host. The movie will replay the following day at 1 p.m., but without a host.
Here's the movie lineup, including the name of the host:
- July 6: "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (with Danny Epperson)
Defying her conventional in-laws, young widow Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) leaves London with her young daughter and moves away for a quieter life in a secluded seaside cottage. But the house is haunted. - July 13: "Goldfinger" (with Joe Flanagan)

Regina Lampert (Audrey Hepburn) falls for the dashing Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) on a skiing trip in the French Alps. She returns to Paris and learns that her husband has been murdered. - Sunday, Aug. 30, 1 p.m.; Monday, Aug. 31, 7 p.m. "Sherlock Jr." The screenings include live accompaniment by pianist and composer Christopher Kypros.
