Grammy winner Donnie 'Mad Skillz' Lewis grew up in Richmond. He will be a featured speaker on Saturday, June 20 at the Black Music & Art Celebration at the Attucks in Norfolk.

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Month, also known now as African American Music Appreciation Month; the purpose is to celebrate the African American musical influences in American history.

The Attucks Theatre — one of the nation’s oldest theaters built and operated by African Americans — will host a Black Music & Art Celebration Saturday. The lineup includes jazz, gospel, hip-hop and more, along with poetry and discussions of the arts.

The event starts at noon with performances by the Bobby Blackhat Band, followed by an artist chat with WHRO's Kayda Plus, Chrysler Museum of Art curator Nyree Dowdy and artist Briana Ariel.

Other acts include the Hot Gumbo Brass Band, the Shark City Drum and Dance Corp, and Teens With a Purpose’s new poet laureates.

Torae, co-chair of the Grammys' Black Music Collective, will also have a conversation with Grammy-winning rapper Mad Skillz.

The event is free and runs from noon to 5 p.m. Attucks Theatre, 1010 Church St., Norfolk.
