NAMI Coastal Virginia program brings the community together through storytelling and advocacy

NAMI Coastal Virginia will host its new signature benefit event, “Coastal Voices: Stories That Carry,” on Thursday at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel.

Coastal Voices invites people to share stories of their mental health challenges or supporting loved ones dealing with them. The hope is that openly discussing mental health and recovery will reduce the stigma that often surrounds them.

The organization is a local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It estimates that one in four adults locally experiences a mental health condition in any given year, such as depression or anxiety.

Katie Rossman, director of development for NAMI Coastal Virginia, created the event after joining in October.

“We really just try to create a space that makes people feel that they aren’t alone,” Rossman said. “There are other people who are dealing with it as well and other families who are going through it.”

The evening begins with a reception, followed by a program featuring several speakers, including Jennifer L. Novotny, a mental health advocate and author; Zollie Russell Jr., who brings insight from his experience in the community; and Theresa Zano-McMillan, who will offer her perspective as a caregiver.

The event will have a silent auction with prizes such as a private wine class and wellness packages.

Proceeds from the event support NAMI Coastal Virginia’s free programs, including peer-led support groups, educational classes and community outreach efforts.

“By sharing lived experiences, we build understanding, hope and a stronger community of support for mental health,” said Max Willey, board president of NAMI Coastal Virginia.

The Thursday, April 30 event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $125. Visit namicoastalvirginia.org for more information.
