Virginia Stage Co. opens its 47th season next week with a lineup that promises a diverse array, including musicals, thrillers, classics and a world premiere.
This season's seven productions begin with “Ain’t Misbehavin,” a Tony Award-winning musical based on legendary jazz musician Thomas “Fats” Waller. It is bookended in April with the premiere of “Malcolm X & Redd Foxx Washing Dishes at Jimmy's Chicken Shack in Harlem,” detailing the trials and tribulations of two yet-to-be-knowns in 1943.
Sept. 3 - 21: “Ain’t Misbehaving,” a co-production with Norfolk State University Theatre Co.
Oct. 22 - Nov. 9: “Emma,” based on the Jane Austen novel.
Dec.3 - 23: “A Merry Little Christmas Carol.” The stage company’s holiday tradition.
Dec. 4 - 28: “A Sherlock Carol,” a mix of mystery and merriment.
Jan. 28 - Feb.15: “Wait Until Dark,” a suspense thriller set in 1944 Greenwich Village in New York.
March 11 - 29: “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” another Broadway classic by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
April 8 - 26: “Malcolm X & Redd Foxx Washing Dishes at Jimmy's Chicken Shack in Harlem.” The play is set in World War II era-Harlem where two men become friends before they eventually become internationally known figures. The play is also debuting at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
