For the U.S. Army, the slogan “Be All You Can Be” has become more than a catch phrase, but a way of life. That life of service is being celebrated this weekend throughout the Hampton Roads area as the Army celebrates its 250th birthday.
On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress voted to create a fighting force to challenge the British; some of the first companies were formed in Virginia. Two years later, on the anniversary, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes and proclaimed June 14 Flag Day.
This weekend’s events include a festival on Friday at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Newport News, featuring family activities such as pony rides, laser tag, inflatables and games. The day includes live music, interactive displays of Army vehicles – land, air and water – and festivities culminate in a concert by the Nashville Nights Band and fireworks. A press release notes that a valid government-issued photo ID is required for entry, but a Real ID is not mandatory.
Saturday, a similar patriotic celebration at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown features musical tributes from the 29th Infantry Division Band of the Virginia Army National Guard and a performance of “The American Soldier” by actor Douglas Taurel.
The Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach will host a special Flying Proms on to mark several milestones: the birthdays of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps; the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II; and the 75th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. In addition to aerial displays, the event will include music, food trucks and fireworks.
