BHM local touch

This week, host Raymond Jones chats with Williamsburg Symphony maestro Michael Butterman about their concert next Tuesday, an evening of timeless English masterworks featuring Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music,” Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, the “London,” and Elgar’s Cello Concerto. To begin this musical evening on a refined note, we hear maestro Butterman himself leading the Williamsburg Symphony in Ottorino Respighi’s in Suite No. 3 from “Ancient Airs and Dances,” inspired by Renaissance and Baroque lute pieces. From there, we enjoy saxophonist Lynn Klock’s sparkling performance with the Virginia Wind Symphony under Dennis Zeisler in “Sapphire,” a contemporary work by composer Catherine McMichael. Next, we discover Robert Ian Winstin’s Cello Concerto, an emotionally charged musical dialogue between soloist and orchestra. Performed by cellist Vera Kornilova and the Kiev Philharmonic, this compelling work is conducted by the composer himself. Then, we’ll take a moment for quiet reflection, exploring the space between reality and imagination as pianist Patricia Goodson performs Josef Foerster’s poetic “Dreaming.” We conclude the three-hour program with “The Wayfaring Stranger,” Robert W. Smith’s evocative take on the American folk tradition, beautifully performed by the Fairfax Wind Symphony.
This Wednesday at 9:00, tune in to discover what Williamsburg Symphony’s upcoming concert has to offer and enjoy three hours of outstanding music connected to our beloved Virginia, carefully curated by host Raymond Jones. Tune in for “A local touch,” on WHRO-FM, or listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
