Each Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM, tune in for “A Local Touch – Music With a Virginia Connection.” This week, host Raymond Jones speaks with Dr. Tyler Austin, music director of the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble, about their upcoming concert this Sunday at William and Mary Arts Center in Williamsburg. From the Overture by American composer Julie Giroux to the fast-paced finale “Zoom,” discover this unique program of music at a free concert.
The evening begins on a warm, pastoral note with Maestro Austin leading the Newfound Chamber Winds in the Petite Symphonie by French composer Charles Gounod. Then, Richmond’s Paul Freeman conducts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with soloist Sanford Allen in the intense and energic Violin Concerto by Roque Cordero. We then join Violonist Dean Shostak and friends for a collection of 18th century folkloric “Mother Goose songs,” followed by Richmonder Mary Howe’s sophisticated “Suite for String Quartet and Piano.” From there, we enjoy conductor Daniel W. Boothe leading Symphonicity in the Symphony No. 3 “Pastoral” by British composer Vaughan Williams. The program concludes with Aaron Copland’s suite from the 1948 film “The Red Pony,” performed by the US Navy Band of Washington, under the baton of Captain Brian Walden.
This Wednesday at 9:00, join Raymond Jones for an evening full of imagination and introspection, filled with the warmth and optimism of the American countryside. Tune in for “A local touch,” on WHRO-FM, or listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
