Join host Raymond Jones every Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM for ‘A Local Touch – Music With A Virginia Connection.’ This week, Raymond brings you powerful music that explores the human experience, from private emotions and inner turmoil to joy, faith, and collective celebration.
We begin the program with Virginia Beach born and raised composer Gregory Spears and his mysterious, hypnotic work “The Neighboring Village.” Based on a story by Franz Kafka and featuring The Virginia Chorale led by Charles Woodward, the piece offers a mesmerizing musical experience in which time appears to stretch and recede. From the “Art Song of Williamsburg” series, we’ll hear Libby Larsen’s intimate “Song from Letters: Calamity Jane to her daughter Janey” featuring soprano Lisa Edwards-Burns and pianist Ruth Easterling Winters. Then, former Richmond Symphony French maestro Jacques Houtmann conducts the Lorraine Philharmonic in the Symphony in d minor by 19th-century German composer Carl Loewe. Next, our “Heifetz on the Air” episode from Staunton awaits and features stunning virtuoso performances. We’ll also have Beethoven’s lyrical Cello Sonata No. 3 performed by local favorite Zuill Bailey. We end the evening on a solemn yet graceful note with Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” performed by the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist orchestra and soloists, under the direction of acclaimed American conductor Akiko Fujimoto.
This Wednesday at 9:00, join Raymond Jones for an evening of music that combines individual voices with the collective force of choir and orchestra. Tune in for “A local touch,” on WHRO-FM, or listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
