This Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FMs “A Local Touch,” host Raymond Jones talks with Williamsburg Symphony maestro Michael Butterman about the orchestra’s upcoming October 13th concert “Sonic Portraits,” at the Williamsburg Community Chapel, preceded by a pre-concert talk.

Butterman also gladly announces that renowned violonist Rachel Barton Pine will perform one of the major pieces of the concert: the Brahms concerto, which he particularly loves. Maestro Butterman is then then joined by guitarist Jason Vieaux for Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez.” In the second movement, the Adagio is extraordinary lyrical and melancholy while the guitar seems almost to be singing over the orchestra. Next, we hear the powerful men’s chorus of University of Virginia Glee Club from their 2000 tour of France, before turning to a much more contemporary work: the Piano Concerto by Virginia-born composer Mason Bates played by the Philadelphia Orchestra. We conclude the program with a medley from the American musical “Oklahoma!,” the first collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, performed by the Williamsburg Choral Guild during its 35th Anniversary season.
This Wednesday evening at 9:00, learn more about an upcoming outstanding concert of the Williamsburg Symphony, featuring one of the most brilliant violinists of her generation. Tune in for “A local touch,” on WHRO-FM, or listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
