“A Local Touch” makes “the sign of the Z” this Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM as Raymond Jones speaks with Opera in Williamsburg’s music director Jorge Parodi about this weekend’s new production of “Zorro.”
Next, we hear organist Daniel Sanez at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond performing his own work entitled “Pastiche.” This unusual piece employs French organ-playing styles and improvisations ranging from Medieval and Renaissance music through North German Baroque. From there, Hampton Roads composer Melvin Lauf Jr., joins fellow members of Flute Frenzy under Margaret Carlson, to present his work “Misty Mountains,” which explores a surprisingly enormous range of color and register. Then, we hear members of the Virginia Company in their wonderfully eclectic “Nine Points of Roguery.” Our “Heifetz on the Air” segment from Staunton, “A Bernstein Celebration,” showcases the remarkable range of works by this great American composer. To conclude this evening in a romantic spirit, we listen to pianist Santiago Rodriguez with the Richmond Sinfonia in Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a beautiful example of Italian melodic lyricism.
