“A Local Touch – Music With A Virginia Connection,” is your weekly program connecting you with classical music performed or composed locally. This Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WHRO-FM, join Raymond Jones for his 66th year of classical music broadcasting, for a program of fairy tales, songs and music performed by military bands.
The program begins with an interesting link between a children's tale and a local military band with Aldo Forte’s “Solomon the Rusty Nail,” performed by the US Air Force Clarinet Quartet, based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Then, we go back to the early days of the Virginia Arts Festival with Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” performed by the Virginia Symphony and conducted by JoAnn Falletta. This Virginia Arts Festival production transforms the traditional fairy tale into a style of news report, featuring famous NPR voices. Next, we hear a reimagining of traditional songs with Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs” played by the Williamsburg Choral Guild under the baton of Jay BeVille. From there, let’s enjoy the work of a Norfolk composer: Ludwig Diehn’s Symphony No. 3 “Romantic” performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic. To conclude the 3-hour program, we turn to Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” with Colonel Larry Lang leading the US Air Force Band of Washington DC.
