Each Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM, join Raymond Jones for “A Local Touch – Music With A Virginia Connection.” This week, we celebrate the return to school with three hours of classical music honoring teachers, learning, and knowledge as students across Virginia begin a new school year.
We begin with an interview of two musicians deeply rooted in the Norfolk and Williamsburg areas: composer Fred Strong and pianist Daniel Inamorato. Fred Strong introduces his forthcoming world premiere of “Triangle Suite,” a work inspired by Virginia’s historic colonial triangle. This piece will be featured in a concert performed on October 4th by Daniel Inamorato, a member of the William and Mary faculty school. Next comes the Tuneful Teachers of Gloucester, along with a selection of songs to celebrate teachers for another school year. Then we travel to Staunton for “Coachings and Collaborations,” our Heifetz on the Air segment. This fascinating archival material offers an intimate glimpse into the personality, artistry, and musicianship of legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz. From there, we turn to the power of the orchestra with a suite from Tchaikovsky’s beloved “Swan Lake” ballet performed by the 2011 All-Virginia School Orchestra.
