This week on “A Local Touch – Music With A Virginia Connection,” Raymond Jones invites you to enjoy three hours of music to take you down the winding path through the end of summer time. Tune in to WHRO-FM Wednesday evening at 9:00 pm.
The evening begins with two classical sacred works: Haydn’s “Te Deum” with the Cantata Chorus of Norfolk conducted by Billy Brown Youmans, and Schubert’s Mass No. 2, under the baton of David Kunkel, conducting the Chorus and Orchestra of First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach. From there, we turn to a more contemporary choral and orchestral work, Hannibal Lokumbe’s “Dear Mrs. Parks” with Norfolk’s own Thomas Wilkins leading the Detroit Symphony and Rackham Symphony Choir. Also on the program, Mendelssohn’s romantic-era Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist James Johnson and the Royal Philharmonic led by Richmond’s own Paul Freeman. To conclude the program on a baroque note, we hear Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3 performed by Juliana Soltis.
