Join Raymond Jones Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM for “A Local Touch – Music With a Virginia Connection.” This week, Raymond talks with Alana Carithers, executive director of the Williamsburg Symphony, about the orchestra’s upcoming season, including some surprises and new elements.
Following the interview, we hear the Williamsburg Symphony perform “Mars” from the orchestral suite “The Planets” by English composer Gustav Holst, under the baton of Michael Butterman. Next, Andre-Michel Schub (former chamber music director for the Virginia Arts Festival) teams up with members of the Miami String Quartet in Mozart’s intense Piano Quartet in g minor. From there, let’s hit the road with The Itinerant Band of Virginia Beach, playing selections from their recording “The Road Out Of Town.” If you like 19th-century poetry, you’ll be delighted by “The Belle of Amherst,” a collection of poetry and music devoted to Emily Dickinson from an Art Song of Williamsburg concert. We conclude the three-hour program with a lyric touch, with Virginia-born cellist Zuill Bailey and friends performing the deeply expressive String Sextet No. 2 in G by Johannes Brahms.
