The evening begins with current music director Valentina Peleggi, who vibrantly leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Florence Price’s warm and lyrical Symphony No. 3. Next, be deeply moved by the Richmond Symphony and Chorus performing Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem,” conducted by Stephen Smith. Then, we hear the Lorraine Philharmonic in Armand Marsick’s evocative “Mountain Scenes”, under the baton of Alsatian maestro Jacques Houtmann. After that, George Manahan leads the St. Luke’s Orchestra and soloists in Gustav Mahler’s sumptuous “The Song of the Earth,” a haunting and reflective meditation on beauty, mortality, and the passing of time. To conclude this Richmond-themed program, we hear the intimate Welsh lullaby “Suo Gan”, performed by the Richmond Symphony Chorus and led by the orchestra’s late chorus master, James Erb.
