Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM for “A Local Touch – Music With a Virginia Connection,” featuring three hours of music linked to the Old Dominion.
We begin the evening with a nod to violinist
Emil Chudnovsky, who performed as soloist with the William & Mary Symphony Orchestra last spring. Here Chudnovsky brings us Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor with the Hillel Hebrew University Orchestra. A cornerstone of the violin repertoire, the concerto remains one of the most beloved works for the instrument.
For the rest of the opening hour, we’ll enjoy recordings from the College of William & Mary’s student ensembles. Under the direction of Professor David Grandis, the William & Mary Symphony Orchestra plays “Le Roman de Tristan” by French composer Paul Ladmirault, from a concert they gave last fall. Then, the Choir of the College of William & Mary led by James Armstrong presents Michael Haydn’s graceful “Ave, Regina Coelorum”. We’ll head to the mountains next for our “Heifetz on the Air” segment from the Heifetz Institute in Staunton, celebrating Bach's enduring genius through “The Joy of Bach.” To conclude the program, pianist and Batten University Professor Emerita Lee Jordan Anders performs Schubert’s intimate Sonata in A minor, followed by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Shizuo Kuwahara in Paul Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, the sparkling orchestral favorite made famous by Disney’s “Fantasia”.
