Wednesday night at 9:00 on WHRO-FM, Raymond Jones invites you to an evening of reflection on “A Local Touch – Music With a Virginia Connection,” with a contemplative program inspired by spirituality, poetry, nature, and evocative landscapes.
We open the evening with selections from
Rachmaninoff’s peaceful “All-Night Vigil” sung by the Virginia Chorale, under the baton of Robert Shoup, followed by Malcolm Archer's luminous “Requiem,” featuring the Choir of Trinity Church Portsmouth conducted by James Derr. We then remain in this introspective atmosphere with two deeply emotional works played by two female musicians with local ties: Virginia-born violinist Hilary Hahn plays the “Poeme” by Ernest Chausson, and Richmond-based cellist Juliana Soltis brings us Bach’s Cello Suite No. 5. In a nod to Virginia’s recent weather, JoAnn Falletta and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra perform Louis Moreau Gottschalk's colorful Symphony No. 1, “A Night in the Tropics.” More American music follows, as pianist Andrey Kasparov presents Paul Bowles’ “Four Latin American Pieces”. To conclude the program, we journey to the sea with the Williamsburg-based ensemble Flute Frenzy in Miyagi’s “The Sea in Spring.”
