Join Raymond Jones Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM for “A Local Touch – Music With A Virginia Connection,” for a second program honoring a true pillar of Norfolk’s classical music community for decades: the late Dr. William Allen Shaffer.
We open this program with César Franck’s “Piece Heroique” and Henri Mulet’s “Byzantine Sketches”, both performed by Shaffer on the organ of Christ & St. Luke’s in Norfolk. Next, Raymond offers a moment of introspection with Benjamin Britten’s “Cello Symphony,” played by Virginia’s Zuill Bailey with the North Carolina Symphony. From here, we head west to the mountains for our Heifetz on the Air segment, “Heifetz in Harrisonburg.” Next, members of the Continental Army Band’s Tradewinds perform the technically demanding Sonatina for Brass by Eugene Bozza. Richmond’s Paul Freeman conducts Mozart’s graceful and timeless Piano Concerto No. 21, featuring Derek Lee as soloist. And we wrap up the show with William Schuman’s “Dances,” a vigorous and rhythmic work performed by the U.S. Navy Band under the direction of Captain Brian Walden. Join us for three hours of music spanning a broad emotional and stylistic range, as we celebrate the legacy of one of Norfolk’s beloved contributors to the classical music community. Tune in for “A Local Touch” on WHRO-FM at 9:00 p.m. You can also listen online through our Media Player or your preferred device.
