Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. for “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection.” This week's program explores music shaped by cultural heritage and the art of storytelling, from the vibrant colors of the Caribbean and the passion of Russian Romanticism to Scottish folk melodies and Celtic musical traditions.
We’ll begin with a journey to the Caribbean and Latin America courtesy of Lorenzo Palomo’s “Caribiana,” performed by violinist Alexandre da Costa, recent soloist at the Virginia Arts Festival. We then travel farther east with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in c minor, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the late Richmond-born maestro Paul Freeman, with soloist Leon Bates. Then, we’ll make a local stop at the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse in the heart of Staunton, Virginia, for a “Heifetz On Air” segment entitled “In the Bard’s Nest,” featuring works from the greatest composers, including Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven. Our journey then continues through the landscapes and history of Scotland with Max Bruch's “Scottish Fantasy” featuring violinist Michael Ludwig and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra led by JoAnn Falletta. We’ll also hear selections from Bruch’s “Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Cello and Piano,” recorded at the 1994 Hampden-Sydney Music Festival. We’ll end the program with a touch of folk influence with a Celtic lute medley by Ronn McFarlane on Virginia’s Sono Luminus label.
