Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. for “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection.” This week, let’s celebrate American music through American artists and composers, with a special Virginia connection.
As Raymond Jones appears this Saturday evening with the Williamsburg Symphony at Yorktown narrating Peter Boyer’s “An American Mosaic,” he enters a patriotic spirit with two additional Peter Boyer works that celebrate
festivity and energy: “Silver Fanfare” and “Festivities.” Following that, explore the richness of the classical repertoire as presented by American artists and ensembles with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by soloist Norman Krieger and the Virginia Symphony under the direction of JoAnn Falletta. We then return to American musical storytelling with Gershwin’s iconic suite from “Porgy and Bess” led by Richmond’s own Paul Freeman. Another Richmond-based musician, cellist Juliana Soltis, brings us her interpretation of the Bach Cello Suite No. 3, with improvised ornamentation in historical Baroque style. Finally, we’ll take a walk on the dynamic and rhythmically vibrant side with Adolphus Hailstork, composer and professor emeritus at Old Dominion, with his Sonata for Two Pianos.
This Wednesday, tune in for three hours of music shaped by Virginia’s vibrant musical community, featuring local performances, and experience how these works reflect the broader American story.
