Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. for “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection.” This week's program features an exclusive talk with Dr. Tyler Austin about the Newfound Chamber Winds and their upcoming Summer Music Festival at Old Dominion University, running from June 8 to 16. This two-week chamber music and new music intensive program offers a unique musical experience built around several fellowship programs taking place simultaneously. Then, to bring this conversation to life, we’ll listen to Dr.
Austin himself leading the Newfound
Chamber Winds in Beethoven’s Wind Octet, Opus 103. We’ll also have members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performing Schubert’s transcendent String Quintet in C, including music director Eric Jacobsen himself on cello! Next, let’s enjoy two works from Aldo Forte that highlight the power of collaboration between composer and performers: his Horn Concerto with Peter Arnold and the Southwest German Radio Symphony, and his “Van Gogh Portraits” with the US Air Force Heritage of America Band under Colonel Larry Lang.
To close this three-hour musical journey, let’s head to Charlottesville for a vibrant 2011 performance of a suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” featuring the All-Virginia High School Orchestra. Bringing together some of the state’s finest young musicians, the ensemble beautifully captured the emotion of Tchaikovsky’s beloved work.
