Out of the Box Album of the Week--Muna--Dancing on the Wall

Muna is a dance rock trio who’s fourth album “Dancing on the Wall” goes beyond the sunny optimistic sound of previous efforts to delve into the darker side of synth-pop.  The songs are equally uplifting and joyful as they are informed and defiant.

It’s not surprising the three members of the band, Katie Gavin, Josette Makin and Naomi McPherson all identify as queer. They perfectly balance euphoric club energy with biting social commentary. One of the songs, a driving rocker, stands out as a political anthem zeroing in on sanctimony and overconsumption.

The album follows a pattern that emulates a night at a club with the first few songs reeking of sweat-filled dancefloors before it turns darker, ending in a sobering state of doom-scroll paralysis.

Muna have captured the anxiety of being alive in today’s world with the danceable power-pop they have made their own since the beginning of the band. On “Dancing on the Ceiling” they prove that consistency is just as riveting as transformation.
