Out of the Box Album of the Week: "Chance Worth Taking" by Marc Broussard.

Marc Broussard is a Louisiana soul singer whose new album, "Chance Worth Taking," his thirteenth , finds him delving into a straight ahead all original blues record for the first time. He’s assembled an elite backing band that allows him to concentrate on his raw, emotional vocals.

Broussard says “I’m still more versed in soul music than in blues, but I’m getting an education in the genre and its history from (his guitarists) Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith.” Other members of the band are Calvin Turner, Reese Wynans and on the grand finale of the album, Trombone Shorty.

Some tracks feature a big-band swing, alongside Louisiana-steeped funk, rock and R&B. He moves easily between moods and textures, showcasing the lived-in authenticity that has always been his specialty.

Just as "Chance Worth Taking" is a change in direction, it remains unmistakably Broussard. His bayou soul is equal parts grit and grace, pulling together this album of ferocious guitar work, roadhouse shuffles, sweeping soul-ballads, horn-driven blues-rock, and Mardi Gras funk.
