Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM for “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection,” a program that brings together exceptional performances by outstanding musicians and celebrated composers from across the Commonwealth.
This week’s edition highlights musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in chamber music by Franz Schubert. Recorded live last September in Newport News, the String Quintet in C features violinists Grace Park and Elizabeth Coulter Vonderheide, violist Celia Daggy, and cellists Jan Vogler and Eric Jacobsen.
From chamber forces to full ensemble, the program continues with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy,” performed by the orchestra and chorus, with pianist Albert Cano Smith, under the baton of Thomas Wilkins. This performance was recorded during an October concert at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.
There’s more Beethoven courtesy of the Borromeo Quartet. The renowned ensemble was recently heard in Hampton Roads as part of the Feldman Chamber Music Series. Here they will perform Quartet in C, Op. 59, No. 3. “Razumovsky.”
We’ll also hear violinist Gil Shaham, another recent guest of the Virginia Symphony, in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D. He is joined by Eric Jacobsen and his New York-based ensemble The Knights.
To close the program, JoAnn Falletta leads the Virginia Symphony in “Night Owl” by Michael Daugherty, a work inspired by the iconic railroad photography of O. Winston Link, whose imagery famously captured the spirit of Virginia’s railways.
