Out of the Box Album of the Week--Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds--Mutiny After Midnight

One of the most unpredictable artists in music today, Sturgill Simpson's second outing as Johnny Blue Skies, Mutiny After Midnight, is a radical departure from the country-soul of his last album. He calls it an exercise in "disco-hedonism with songs split into the dark state of the world and the bright state of love".

Well known for his sharp turns stylistically Simpson says he wanted to make an album in retaliation to America’s embrace of fascism. A “protest against oppression and suppression.”

Its only available on cd and vinyl to support independent record shops and, as he says, “to promote a bygone tangible connection between music and music fans… the mystical bond that stems from holding a new piece of artistic expression in your hands while hearing it for the first time."

Full of profane and politically charged lyrics, Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds’ “Mutiny After Midnight” delivers a high energy romp of rock, r&b and Americana. It’s urgency is infectious, unexpected and a provocative act of joy in a troubled time.
