Keep Your Classical Collection Up to Date with ‘This Just In’

Each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, “This Just In” brings you three hours of recent classical releases, an opportunity to discover new recordings, and stay current with what’s happening across the classical music landscape.

This week, host Raymond Jones opens with music from the comprehensive box set released by Warner Classics devoted to the stereo recordings of Sir Thomas Beecham. We’ll hear Mozart’s Divertimento No. 2, recorded in 1958 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Some of our listeners may have attended one of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra concerts this past weekend and heard siblings Orli Shaham and Gil Shaham performing music by composer Reena Esmail. If you’d like to hear more of her work, Raymond brings you “Saans,” performed here by pianist Orli Shaham and included in the Pacific Symphony’s recent release “American Tapestry.” And we’ll also hear another recent recording of Esmail’s music: “#metoo,” performed by the Chicago Sinfonietta on a newly released Cedille album. This piece was written as a response to the persistent question of why so few women composers have historically been recognized, making it especially fitting to feature during Women’s History Month.

From the Prospero Classical label comes Symphony No. 1 by the German composer Günter Raphael, performed by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Fabian Enders. And from the Reference Recordings we’ll hear “Trois Pièces originales dans le goût espagnol” by the Spanish composer Enrique Fernández Arbós, performed by the Hermitage Piano Trio.

All these recent releases and more come your way this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3 with Raymond Jones and “This Just In.” Tune in on the radio or listen online and stay up to date with what’s new in classical music.
