The Another View Roundtable: War, Pain, Resistance, Remembrance

barbara vab

The Another View team was in full-emergency information mode on Thursday. Just before going on-air, Old Dominion University, which is just adjacent to WHRO, issued a campus-wide alert to shelter in place. Scheduled round-table guests could not make it to the station due to Hampton Boulevard being closed. Barbara Hamm Lee began the broadcast with an update on the ODU situation with News Director Mechelle Hankerson. We quickly shifted the in-studio roundtable to a zoom call with Norfolk City Treasurer Daun Hester, Hampton President of the NAACP and political consultant Gaylene Kanoyton, and Clean Comedian Allison Moore. The round table discussed the pending referendum in Virginia that will create new congressional districts, the war in Iran, rising Gas Prices, and more. This program also paid tribute to the late civil rights icon Jesse Jackson. It was a hectic but information laden and reflective hour. You can hear this, and all Another View programs on demand on the show's program page.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
