Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 this Saturday at 1 p.m. for Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut,” part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday matinee radio broadcasts. This week’s presentation is an Artist Choice selection by soprano Asmik Griogorian, honoring the legendary Italian diva Mirella Freni.
In this 1990 Met Performance, Freni takes on the title role of Puccini’s tragic heroine, a young woman torn between the seductive promise of wealth and the irresistible pull of true love. Tenor Peter Dvorsky stars as the devoted Chevalier des Grieux, who risks everything to follow her. The cast also features Brian Schexnayder as her calculating brother Lescaut and Italo Tajo as the wealthy Geronte. Maestro Nello Santi leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in Puccini’s emotional score.
Hear “Manon Lescaut” this Saturday at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or stream it online through our Media Player.
