New Classical Music Takes Center Stage

Check out three hours of new classical releases each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM with “This Just In.” This week, Raymond Jones has for you a striking mix of landmark interpretations and brand-new releases that you don’t want to miss.

The evening opens with Sibelius’s “Incidental Music for Pelléas et Mélisande,” heard in a classic performance conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording appears in a recently released Warner Classics collection devoted to Beecham’s legacy.

A true contemporary highlight follows with Behzad Ranjbaran’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, presented here in its first recording. JoAnn Falletta leads the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra with violinist Nikki Chooi as soloist. The work appears on the album “A Hero’s Life,” released by Beau Fleuve.

We will also continue our ongoing exploration of Shostakovich’s symphonies under the direction of Gianandrea Noseda, with Symphony No. 8 performed live by the London Symphony Orchestra.

And rounding out the program is Edvard Grieg’s “Lyric Suite,” performed by the BBC Philharmonic under John Storgårds, drawn from the BBC Music Magazine Collection.

Hear it all this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, or online through our Media Player or your Smart Device.
