Opera in Williamsburg Takes Center Stage on ‘A Local Touch’

This Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WHRO-FM, “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection” brings a rich mix of performances tied to the Commonwealth’s vibrant musical life.

With Gluck’s “Orfeo and Euridice” coming soon to Williamsburg, host Raymond Jones speaks with countertenor Nicholas Tamagna, who will sing the role of Orfeo, and conductor Jorge Parodi about their upcoming production. Presented November 4, 7, and 9 at the Kimball Theater, the opera will feature the original Viennese version in Italian. Tickets are available online: www.operainwilliamsburg.org

A selection of pieces from the opera will follow the conversation. We’ll hear “Che faro senza Euridice” and the ethereal “Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits.”

The program continues with a Trio Sonata by Arcangelo Corelli, recorded in the historic Dome Room of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. Flutist Rob Turner, violinist Kevin Bushee, and cellist Lyanne Wilson bring this score to life.

Then, brothers Colin Jacobsen on violin and Eric Jacobsen conducting their ensemble, The Knights, perform Beethoven’s “Kreutzer Concerto,” an orchestral version of the composer's Violin Sonata No. 9. Both musicians are familiar faces to local audiences: Eric Jacobsen serves as Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and Colin Jacobsen has frequently performed here in Hampton Roads.

Heading up to Staunton, the program also features a segment from the “Heifetz on Air" series. This week, we will celebrate the brilliance of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn with works that range from the sparkling “Octet” to introspective chamber pieces.

Rounding out the program, the Richmond-based Atlantic Chamber Ensemble performs Bohuslav Martinů’s “Nonet No.2.”

Experience the artistry, history, and creativity that connect Virginia’s stages and concert halls on “A Local Touch” this Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online through our Media Player or your favorite smart device.
