Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. as Raymond Jones opens the door to the latest classical releases from around the globe on “This Just In.” This week’s program offers a particularly rich mix of traditions, discoveries, and celebrations, you don’t want to miss.

The journey will begin in the North with Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén’s Symphony No. 3, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Niklas Willén. This work continues our ongoing exploration of Brilliant Classics “Nordic Symphonies” series, revealing Alfvén’s gift for sweeping Romantic melody and vivid orchestral color.

In a nod to Hispanic Heritage Month, Raymond Jones has selected Gaspar Cassadó’s Piano Trio in C, a vibrant and rhythmically charged work by the Spanish composer and cellist. The Hermitage Piano Trio performs it on their new album “Spanish Impressions” from Reference Recordings.

From the Indesens label comes Franz Schubert’s Octet, performed by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Ensemble, a chamber masterwork filled with charm, lyricism, and Viennese elegance.

The night goes on with a fascinating interpretation of Mozart’s “Requiem,” in the completion by Robert Levin, conducted by Sir Donald Runnicles with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Scotland.

Also on the program, we'll have Harry Christophers and his renowned choral ensemble, The Sixteen, performing Will Todd’s “I Shall Be an Angel of Peace,” alongside violinist Sarah Sexton.

Finally, from Naxos, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland performs Gabriel Fauré’s gentle “Berceuse” with violinist Pierre Fouchenneret and conductor Jean Luc Tingaud, a graceful close to an evening of discovery and beauty.

If it’s new and it’s classical, you’ll hear it on “This Just In.” Every Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, and streaming online through our Media Player or smart devices.
