Every Saturday evening at 8:00, Raymond Jones brings you three hours of new classical releases on “This Just In,” and this week’s program is full of rare gems and timeless masterpieces.
The night will begin with an orchestral suite by Johann Friedrich Fasch, performed by the Philadelphia-based baroque ensemble “Tempesta di Mare.” From their Chandos release “Fasch: Orchestral Works, Vol 4,” this vibrant collection highlights Fasch’s inventive writing and the ensemble’s signature energy.
From our ongoing exploration of Brilliant Classics’ Nordic Symphonies collection comes Hugo Alfvén’s Symphony No. 1, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Niklas Willén. This youthful work by one of Sweden’s most celebrated composers is brimming with Romantic color and Nordic character.

Raymond Jones will also feature one of the cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire: Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A, performed by pianist Marc-André Hamelin and the Takács Quartet. From the Hyperion release “Dvořák & Price: Piano Quintets,” this performance brings warmth and brilliance to a much-loved masterpiece.
From the BBC Music Magazine comes something truly unique: Vaughan Williams’s “The Lark Ascending” in an arrangement for violin and chorus. With violinist Laura Samuel and the BBC Singers under Sofi Jeannin, this version adds a new dimension of ethereal beauty to one of England’s most beloved works.
And for the adventurous, Christopher Tyler Nickel's Concerto for Four Wagner Tubas. Yes, four! The Vancouver Contemporary Orchestra under Clyde Mitchell brings this extraordinary piece to life, showcasing the hybrid instrument Wagner designed for his Ring Cycle.
The night will come to an end with Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata, the composer’s final work, performed by violist Ettore Causa and pianist Boris Berman.
