Each Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM, host Raymond Jones brings “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection.” This week, join us for a journey that’s out of this world, literally, as the program begins with “Mars” from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” performed by the Williamsburg Symphony. This concert was recorded live this past March at the Williamsburg Community Chapel and was conducted by Michael Butterman.
From outer space, we’ll waltz back to earth with Johann Strauss’s beloved “Blue Danube,” played by Symphonicity and conducted by Daniel W. Boothe. And since it’s fall and fair season, we’ll stop by a “Colonial Fair” with Dean Shostak and friends in a lively recording that captures the spirit of early America.

Then, it’s up to Staunton for another installment of “Heifetz on Air.” This week’s edition of “More Bach Around the Clock” brings highlights from the Bach birthday at Christ Lutheran Church, featuring intimate solo works, radiant arias, joyful sinfonias, and grand cantatas. All celebrating the timeless genius of Johann Sebastian Bach.
World-renowned violinist Hilary Hahn was born in Lexington, in the Virginia mountains, not far from Staunton. We’ll hear her in Louis Spohr’s Violin Concerto No. 8 with the Swedish Radio Symphony under Eiji Oue. And we’ll wrap up with Richmond-born maestro Paul Freeman leading the Orchestra of the Americas in a suite from Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”
From planets to preludes, waltzes to West Side, it’s all part of Virginia’s rich musical landscape, and it’s on “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection.” Join us this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. for a thrilling musical night on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online through our Media Player.
