Late Night Americana on The Best of Pickin

This week, the Best of Pickin brings you a wide range of Americana Artists with music from The Hackensaw Boys, Sam Bush, Ronnie Bowman, Red Allen, Jim and Jesse, and plenty of others. It's a unique mix of new- progressive artists, combined with the hard-core traditional acts that helped to launch and define the genre. Red Allen was popular in the DC- Northern Virginia musical scene of the 50s and 60s. Many Appalachian residents had settled into DC and Northern Virginia during the depression as they sought work. They brought with them a love of the music and for years, the region was a major Bluegrass musical hub. The Hackensaw Boys hail from Charlottesville and are known for a high-level energetic approach to the music. Tune in for the new and the traditional sounds of Americana. It's the Best of Pickin. Friday night 10-12 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
