The Williamsburg Symphony

The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra

This Wednesday evening at 9:00 on WHRO-FM, “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection” highlights the talent and artistry across the Commonwealth, with orchestras and ensembles from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach bringing their music to the airwaves. Join host Raymond Jones for a night of beloved classics and fresh voices tied to Virginia’s vibrant classical scene.

BHM local touch

The first orchestra to take the stage will be the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra in their 2023 performance of Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” featuring internationally acclaimed guitarist Jason Vieaux under the baton of Michael Butterman. Then, the Richmond Symphony performs “Revel” by American composer Beth Anderson, led by Jacques Houtmann.

From Virginia Beach, Symphonicity teams up with flutist Amber Kidd for Cécile Chaminade’s sparkling Flute Concertino, under the direction of Daniel W. Boothe. And we’ll also hear the Virginia Symphony Orchestra with JoAnn Falletta in Felix Mendelssohn’s “Fair Melusina Overture.”

Our “Heifetz on the Air” segment takes us to Staunton for “Bach Around the Clock,” the annual 12-hour Bach birthday marathon at Christ Lutheran Church. Expect Bach in every form, from piano solos and guitar duets to soaring cantatas and even a playful turn on the banjo.

And we’ll also visit the historic Christ Church in Lancaster, where The Canticum Novum under Carol Taylor performed delightful works by Orlando Gibbons, William Smith, William Crotch, and Thomas Tallis, in a moving Evensong service.

Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online, for “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection”
