Check out three hours of new classical releases each and every Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on “This Just In,” a program where tradition meets discovery.
This week’s program begins with Maurice Ravel’s vibrant “Alborada del Gracioso,” performed by the Buffalo Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta. It comes from “The French in Spain,” a Naxos release from last Friday.
Also new from last week is “River of Music,” the latest album from the acclaimed Kanneh-Mason family. We’ll hear Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet, a work full of warmth, sparkle, and lyrical charm.
Our ongoing exploration of the “Nordic Classics” collection continues with Johan Svedsen’s Symphony No. 1, performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Bjarte Engeset.
The program then turns to Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 31, in a masterful performance by Sviatoslav Richter. This carefully restored recording from the 1960s captures Richter at the height of his pianistic power.
We’ll also hear Ferdinand Ries’ Symphony No. 2, performed by the Tapiola Sinfonietta under Janne Nisonen. A student of Beethoven, Ries provides a fascinating glimpse into the wider Viennese world of the early 19th Century.
Adding to the evening’s delights are Gabriel Fauré’s “Dolly Suite” with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and another dazzling work by Ravel, “La Valse,” in a striking performance by the Orchestre de Paris led by Klaus Mäkelä.
If you want to start this journey of discovery, don’t miss “This Just In” this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online through our Media Player or your smart device.
