A Double Dose of Italian Drama, this Saturday on WHRO-FM

This Saturday at 1 p.m., WHRO-FM presents one of the most thrilling double bills in the operatic repertoire: Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo, performed from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

In “Cavalleria Rusticana,” Yulia Matochkina stars as Santuzza, caught in a web of love, jealousy, and vengeance, opposite Ican Gyngazov as Turiddu and Rosalind Plowright as Lucia. Wolfgang Koch portrays the vengeful Alfio, with Ekaterine Buachidze as Lola.

The program continues with Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci,” featuring Jonas Kaufmann as the tragic clown Canio and Ailyn Pérez as Nedda, the woman at the heart of betrayal and jealousy. Wolfgang Koch returns as the calculating Tonio, joined by Andres Agudelo, Thomas Mole, Christian Rieger, and Zachary Rioux.

Under the baton of Daniele Rustioni, the Bavarian State Orchestra brings both scores vividly to life, creating a dramatic afternoon of opera.

Don’t miss this compelling double bill of love, jealousy, and vengeance, this Saturday at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online through our Media Player or your smart device.
