Tune in this Saturday at 1 p.m. and enjoy a rare operatic pairing from Copenhagen: Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” and Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins.”

The first one is a jewel of the Baroque era and one of the earliest great English operas. “Dido and Aeneas” tells the tragic love story of the Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas. Danielle De Niese breathes life into Dido, and Jóhann Kristinsson will be Aeneas. They are joined by Julie Roset as Belinda and Jasmin White as the Sorceress, with the Danish National Symphony under the baton of Geoffrey Paterson.

Then we move to the biting satire of Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Written in 1933 with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht, this hybrid opera and ballet follows two Annas, both played by Danielle De Niese, as they journey across America, confronting greed, pride, lust, and other deadly sins. The performance also features the Malmö Opera Chorus and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Geoffrey Paterson.

Join us this Saturday afternoon for two unforgettable works. One, a cornerstone of early opera, and the other a 20th-century classic of biting irony. Right here on WHRO-FM 90.3 and also online through the Media Player or your smart device.
