Two Fourths and More, this Saturday on ‘This Just In’

Join Raymond Jones this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for “This Just In” and enjoy three hours of the newest classical releases, with a program that blends symphonic power, chamber intimacy, and operatic flair.

This week features not one, but two Fourth Symphonies. We’ll have Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, also known as “The Inextinguishable”, in a thrilling performance by the Janáček Philharmonic under Theodore Kuchar. This work is part of Brilliant Classics’ ongoing “Nordic Symphonies” collection that we’ve been exploring in recent weeks.

And next, we’ll have Beethoven’s Fourth in a most unusual guise: reimagined for piano, violin, and cello. Emmanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma bring their remarkable artistry to this arrangement on the Sony Classical album “Beethoven for Three – Symphony No. 4 and Op. 97.”

Cello fans will find even more to enjoy in Albéric Magnard’s Sonata in A for Cello and Piano, elegantly performed by Alain Meunier and pianist Anne le Bozec. This recording comes from the French label Le Palais des Dégustateurs.

From Switzerland comes Richard Flury’s String Quartet No. 2, performed with warmth and precision by the Colla Parte Quartet. And to close the evening, a sparkling slice of French opera: Daniel Auber’s lively “Don Juan Overture,” recorded by the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra under Dario Salvi.

All this and more on “This Just In,” with Raymond Jones, this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, and streaming online via our Media Player and smart devices.
