Hair Anxiety on Another View

On this week's Another View: It's a phenomenon uniquely experienced by many African American women- Hair Anxiety. It stems from societal pressures, discrimination, and personal insecurities about their natural hair and can result in lifestyle changes like limiting exercise, yielding to pressure in the workplace to have straight hair, and spending lots of time and money on styling and haircare products. So, what are ways that Black Women can come to terms with their hair and be at peace with its natural beauty? Michelle Williams, CEO of Versus Salon and Ashley Tru Ward, actress, musician and spokesperson discuss hair anxiety. Also, Oscar nominated actor Djimon Hounsou talks about an upcoming event he will be at to commemorate the landing of the first African Americans at Fort Comfort (now known as Fort Monroe) in 1619. This, and all Another View programs can be heard on-demand on the show's page.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
