This week, “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection” sets its sights just south of the state line for an evening dedicated to the rich musical life of North Carolina. Tune in Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM, where host Raymond Jones brings listeners a program that celebrates classical music across state borders, because WHRO-FM is classical music radio for northeastern North Carolina as well as Virginia.

Our journey begins with the North Carolina Symphony, led by Gerhardt Zimmermann, in a passionate performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, recorded live in April 2002 at the North Carolina Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh.
Next, the University of North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of John Mauceri, brings to life Erich Korngold’s incidental music for Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.”
We’ll also hear the Concert Singers of Cary performing the beloved tune “Simple Gifts,” with Jodi Adams at the piano and Lawrence Speakman conducting.
The program continues with a live performance from October 2005 featuring the Yale Russian Chorus at Duke University, recorded at the magnificent Duke University Chapel under the direction of Denis Mickiewicz.
Finally, we’ll close with the Campbell University Choir in a radiant performance of Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” led by Dr. Phillip Morrow, a serene and luminous interpretation that captures the spirit of choral artistry in the region.
Join Raymond Jones this Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM for a heartfelt musical visit to The Old North State, filled with powerful performances and enduring connections. Listen to WHRO-FM 90.3 or stream online through our Media Player or your favorite device.
