Tune in to WHRO-FM this Saturday at 8 p.m. for a musical selection that brings together sweeping Nordic landscapes and lyrical English gardens. Raymond Jones has curated a vibrant journey through recently released classical works from a moving chamber piece by Dorothy Rudd More to rich orchestra performances by Nielsen, Sibelius, and Brahms.

This week’s episode will transport our audience to the British countryside with Ruth Gipps' “Cringlemire Garden,” a piece that is featured in the Chandos release “Ruth Gipps: Orchestral Works, Vol 3,” and performed by the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba.
From the “Nordic Symphonies” collection on Brilliant Classics, an anthology we’ve been sampling in recent weeks, comes Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No 1, played by the Janáček Philharmonic under Theodore Kuchar. And we’ll also taste Sibelius’s haunting tone poem “En Saga,” from the same compilation, with the Berlin Symphony led by Kurt Sanderling.
Star cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason brings raw intensity and lyricism to Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2, joined by Sinfonia of London under conductor John Wilson. This standout recording appears on his newest Decca album, “Shostakovich & Britten.”
We’ll also hear Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor in a rich interpretation by the National Philharmonic of London, released on the French boutique label Le Palais des Dégustateurs.
And closing the evening is a powerful local connection: Richmond-based cellist Juliana Soltis performs “Dirge and Deliverance” by American composer Dorothy Rudd Moore. The work is featured on Navona Records’ “American Woman,” an album that celebrates contributions by women in classical music.
Don’t miss this dynamic mix of new recordings! Tune in to “This Just In” with Raymond Jones, Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3. You can also listen online through our Media Player or on your favorite smart device.
