This Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., join Raymond Jones on WHRO-FM for a new edition of “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection,” the program that celebrates the artists, performances, and compositions linking the Commonwealth to the wider world of classical music.
We’ll open the night with violinist Lana Trotovsek, who recently graced the Virginia Arts Festival, performing alongside her Greenwich Trio colleagues: cellist Heather Tuach and pianist Yoko Misumi. The selected piece will be Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C, a warm, lyrical work filled with expansive melodies and rich textures.
From there, we will stay connected to Hampton Roads’ vibrant classical scene with pianist Lee Jordan-Anders in Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A minor, bringing her acclaimed artistry to one of the composer’s late masterpieces.
Stephen Coxe, a familiar name to our audiences, will be featured in his own Cello Sonata, recorded live at the Norfolk Chamber Consort’s Fiftieth Anniversary Concert at Chandler Recital Hall at Old Dominion University, with cellist Jeffrey Phelps joining the composer at the piano.
We’ll also hear Andrey Kasparov, co-director of the Norfolk Chamber Consort, in Paul Bowles’ evocative “6 Preludes,” and JoAnn Falletta, Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, conducting the London Symphony in Jack Gallagher’s First Symphony.
From Staunton we’ll have our “Heifetz on the Air” episode entitled “Easy Winners,” inspired by the Scott Joplin Rag. We’ll hear talented alumni from the Heifetz International Music Institute who have gone on to win top prizes at major international stages.
Tune in for an evening where Virginia’s musicians, ensembles, and performances illuminate the rich connections between local artistry and the global classical stage. Listen this Wednesday at 9 p.m., on WHRO-FM 90.3 or stream online through our Media Player or your smart device.
