Late Night Americana on The Best of Pickin

Catch some great late night- Americana for your Fourth of July weekend with The Best of Pickin. Music from the Lonesome River Band, Ronnie Bowman, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Wood Brothers, and plenty of others. Also, music from the wonderful Levon Helm and his comeback 2007 album "Dirt Farmer." Helm was the celebrated drummer in The Band- which originated as the backup group for Bob Dylan. Helm had stopped recording in 1982, and Dirt Farmer was his first album in 25 years. It would go on to win a 2008 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Helm's follow up release "Electric Dirt" in 2010 would win a second Grammy. Also, music from regional artists The Gurleys and Mercy Creek. Tune in for The Best of Pickin. Friday night 10-12 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
