Black Environmentalists and America at 250 on Another View

This week, Another View welcomed three activists who are working to make the region a better place to call "home." Thelonius Cook, Tyrone Jarvis, and Otis Jones are actively involved in methods to protect the environment. Cook is a famer on Virginia's Eastern Shore and uses organic resources for his crops. Jarvis owns Go Green Auto Care and uses rainwater as his major water source. Otis Jones is Board Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Collectively, they are working to protect Mother Earth. Also, time for a Another View History lesson with Dr. Anthony Parent discusses the collision of cultures that came together in early America and the relationships between Native Americans, The Enslaved Africans, and the English Colonists. Also, Senator Mamie Locke who is the Co-Chair of the Virginia 250th Commission. It's a thought-provoking full hour on this week's Another View. You can hear this and all Another View programs on demand on the program's page.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
